Karen Bernat, 65, has bags full of dancing shoes. She’s been learning ballroom dances like the waltz, fox-trot and tango for the past six years. She recently participated in the United States Dance Championships with her coach, and won three gold medals and a silver, in her age category. She almost didn’t go to the competition in Florida, which was held in early September. Her husband, Fred, had contracted meningitis some time before, and she had to be sure he was OK before she left. She also had her own health issue to deal with; shingles near one eye. She won gold medals in her age category for a waltz, a tango, a fox-trot and a silver for the Viennese waltz. She said she discovered a passion for dancing, and worked to get in better shape for the sport. Working with Fitness Together trainer Matt Gagliano, she lost 55 pounds. She and her husband Fred have lived in Barrington for 25 years.
Dancing: “It’s such a passion. It’s just an incredible, incredible experience.”
