A Great way to Celebrate Halloween!

The Fitness Together North Buckhead gang and friends had a great run at the Run Like Hell 5K benefiting the Historic Oakland Cemetery!

On a very cool, crispy morning, we met at Fitness Together North Buckhead and headed over to historic Oakland Cemetery in downtown Atlanta, where the legendary Margaret Mitchell is buried.  Though I am a native, I'll admit I'd never been there before. I also will tell you I'm not a big fan of going to cemeteries just to go hang out.  However, Oakland Cemetery is getting very creative in drawing revenue for the site (see article in Wall Street Journal).

On one hand you're thinking (maybe it's just me), "is this disturbing the dead?"  However, the more I thought about it, I figured that doing a 5K in Oakland Cemetery pays great tribute to the dead.  It shows we can demonstrate the joy of living, even in a cemetery.  As I learned from a FT patron, Genaro Rionda, in Mexico you have the Day of the Dead.  This holiday has no affiliation to the American Halloween.  As a matter of fact, instead of viewing the dead as evil-doers such as monsters and ghosts, the Day of the Dead honors the dead.  Rather than go Trick or Treating (read my recent article on Trick or Treating), they bring gifts to those who once lived and celebrate with joyful parties.

You may find that bringing gifts to the dead is silly.  Maybe so, however, we can find something silly in all holidays, domestic and foreign.  We can choose to view the good and best things of any holiday.  In my view, going to a cemetery to meet with friends and benefit the cemetery is a great way to celebrate Halloween or possibly any holiday.  The contributions will keep Oakland Cemetery beautiful.  Of which, by the way, it is!  I must go again to bask in its historic prevalence and its beauty.  If I did not do this race, I would not have recognized the value in going again in a not so fast 5K pace.

Anyway, FT fit coach, Katie Jensen and client, Ann Pequigney, had the best times.  They finished together.  Everyone finished under 35 minutes.  We all had a lot of fun!
