Nutrient Brief: Prized Pineapple

Sweet, juicy and tangy is the best way to describe the delicious fruit called Pineapple. A favorite of many and 2nd to the banana as American’s favorite fruit, this tropical wonder has many health benefits.

Primarily grown in Hawaii, Pineapple is a great source of Vitamin C (78.87 mg/per cup)! It is also a great source of Manganese (1.53 mg/per cup), which helps in energy production and antioxidant defense.

Bromelain, which is an enzyme that is found in the core and stem of a pineapple, has a few health related benefits. It helps with digestion because its main purpose is to break down protein chains (With this in mind, you can use pineapple to tenderize your meat!). Recent studies have shown that pineapples can help with joint inflammation by breaking down the C-reactive protein that triggers the body’s inflammation response. This means that it can help people with rheumatoid arthritis, gout, osteoporosis, injuries, and surgery.

When buying a pineapple be sure to find a pineapple that is heavy in size, no bruises or soft spots, and smell sweet at the stem. If it smells musty or fermented do not buy it!

Fun Fact! : Pineapple pickers are the only people in the world that do not have finger prints due to the Bromelain enzyme breaks down the protein chains of the skin. The finger prints will come back in a couple months after they stop picking.
