Nutrient Brief: Lively Limes

With spring comes May, with May comes Cinco De Mayo, and with Cinco De Mayo comes "mas cervezas". It's a favorite past time of the United States and an excuse to drink anything with a little piece of lime adorning the rim. Though it is true that a Corona just taste better with the compliment of the citrus (and let's not forget those great mojitos), we don't have to drink to enjoy the benefits of this zesty fruit.
Limes are great served with with fish and poultry.  You can cooked sliced lime on top of dishes or use the juices (maybe combine with other juices) to flavor food and keep the dish juicy.  At this time of year, lime and cilantro go well together to create salsa.
Here are some interesting facts about Limes.
  • One small lime can contain over a third of your required vitamin c, small amounts of iron and even calcium.
  • Limes are in peek season from May through August but are still available any time of the year.
  • Dampened with water and stored in a plastic bag, limes will stay fresh in the refrigerator for over a month and even longer if frozen.
  • During the 18th century, British sailors carried limes with them on long voyages to avoid developing scurvy. Hence the nickname "Limeys".
